So what is Biodiversity?

Six diverse species
'Biodiversity' is short for 'biological diversity' – the total variety of all living things. This includes all plants and animals, as well as the places and spaces in which they live. Read the background to local action for biodiversity

Priorities

Action across the Bath & North East Somerset area is targeted at species and habitats of greatest conservation value, delivering both national and local conservation targets. In 2004, the Partnership agreed and published a Long List which included 11 habitats and over 450 species. From this, a Short List of 11 priority species and 5 priority habitats was produced.

Bath & North East Somerset specific, 3 year Action Plans are now being created for these priority Short List species and habitats and so far 3 habitat and 7 species plans have been written.

The Short List is under review and species and habitats may well be added in the future.

News in Brief

Dormouse

Dormouse News

The Dormouse Project is continuing with nest boxes and nesting tubes up in good sites around Bath & North East Somerset. So far there have only been two new populations identified. Dormice really are very rare and elusive. The total number of known dormouse populations in the area is only six.

Bath & North East Somerset Council Planning Services award small grants to support " not for profit groups" to carry out practical heritage, landscape and wildlife projects in the year from April 2009 to 2010 in the district. We are particularily interested in projects which create, conserve or enhance wildlife habitats, or protect important species. Special consideration will be given to projects that aim to help "priority" species or habitats as listed on the Wildthings Biodiversity Action Plan "Short list".

Toads on the move

Charlcombe Lane has been closed for the fifth year to allow the most important toad migration to take place safely. Every year thousands of toads, frogs and newts which have been spending the last year in the fields above the lane, make their way down to the lakes, ponds and water courses in the Charlcombe valley to breed.
